The Latest in L-Mount: 2019 Lens Options and Optics

November 20, 2019

By Conor Risch

The L-Mount, started by Leica in 2014, already has more 50 lenses on the market. Panasonic and Sigma announced during Photokina in September of 2018 that they would be offering solutions for the full-frame and APS-C mount.

With a number of lenses already released in 2019, Panasonic has promised 11 other compatible lenses by March of 2021. Last February, Sigma promised they were working on releasing at least 11 new primes.

Sigma’s new L-Mount fp camera, first shown as working models during PhotoPlus in October and available now, is likely to be seeing a lot of support with optics this next year.

Since holiday sales are beginning on a number of kits, it may be a good time to be looking at the system.

Leica started the L-Mount with their Leica T camera in 2014, so they already have a lot of options available for it. Their Leica APO-Summicron-SL 75mm f/2 ASPH and Leica APO-SUMMICRON-SL 90mm f/2 for full-frame SL and T system mirrorless lenses and cameras are ideal portrait lengths.

The Panasonic LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F2.8 O.I.S. and LUMIX S PRO 16-35mm F4 are the latest zooms for the full-frame L-Mount families of cameras like the Sigma fp, the Leica SL2 and Panasonic’s own Lumix S1 series of cameras, the S1, S1H and S1R.

Compatible with the Lumix in-camera Body I.S., 5-Axis Dual I.S. 2 in the lens gives up to seven stops of handshake compensation. That’s good, because the reach can be extended all the way to 400mm if combining with the optional Panasonic S-Series DMW-STC20 2x teleconverter.

Both lenses are available for preorder now, with delivery this January.

[Sigma to Release 11 Art Lenses for L-Mount Cameras]

Available in early December, the $1,099 Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art zoom will arrive for full-frame mirrorless Sony E-mount and L-Mount cameras from Panasonic, Leica and of course Sigma themselves, who just released their own $1,899 Sigma fp camera.

The constant aperture features an 11-blade diaphragm for incredibly rounded bokeh to out-of-focus elements. The body is dust- and splash-proof for location shooting, too.

A zoom lock also keeps the lens barrel from extending unexpectedly. It has near macro at 1:2.9 magnification at the wide-angle end and 1:4.5 at the telephoto for a natural representation of subjects.
